Empty Your Head for Peace!

My Son Jack's Empty Head
The most important part of being at peace is having a clear mind. Once your mind is clear you are able to direct it where you want it to go rather than chase it around like a hyper puppy off its leash.

Most of us really have no idea how much stuff is jammed into our heads until we give ourselves the time and space to let it bubble up and out of the chaos of our subconscious. Have you ever tried to [read more]

What Would You Do to Get What You Want?

Posted on Nov 13th, 2008 by Doug : Big Heart Doug
What would you do to get what you want?
I am now regularly blogging over at Lime.com.  Here is the begining of a post that just went up this week.

What would you do to get what you want?  In this picture you can get a sense of what my five-year-old son, Jack, went through to find where the Halloween candy was hidden. (Hint: it's the open cupboard door at the top of the picture.)

I was blown away watching Jack's multiple attempts to get to his jackpot, the candy. What I loved witnessing was how quickly he... (click here to read more)

Put Me In Coach!

Pop over to the magazine Whole Life Times (also known as Conscious Choice, Gaia, and Common Ground in various cities) and read an article featuring my coaching.

http://wholelifetimes.com/2008/11/tunein0811.html

I would love to hear your thoughts on the article.  I would also love to share any of the developmental theory that is lingering in the background of the coaching work i do.

I head off to Washington, DC next week for more training in an integral coaching process that is blowing my mind.  Let me know if you want to hear more about it.  I would love to share.

Be well,
Doug

PS: The picture is of my three year old son making a gingerbread house.  Yes, as you can see, he is a rascal.

What is your relationship to waiting?

Posted on Nov 6th, 2008 by Doug : Big Heart Doug
This is in Response to the Questions and Reflections for November 06, 2008:

My first thought was the anticipation, the stress, and the excitement of waiting for my first child to be born.  It called me forward to be more of a man, a husband, a father, and a spiritual warrior.  The situation demanded that I surrender all expectations and open my heart... doing my best to love every moment of the journey.

And the pay off?

Brings tears to my eyes remembering that moment...  holding my child for the first time... seeing the look in my wife's eyes as she welcomed him to her chest...  the delight of his cries...  Hmmm....

Causes me to wonder what life would be like if I took these thoughts into my everyday opportunities to wait...  in traffic jams... in doctor's offices... standing at the front door waiting for my sons (yes we had another)...  for my wife...  Hmmm... That is a nice invitation.

Hi,

Here are my two boys.  They have been wearing their costumes since they got them... everyday.  We will see if they hold up until Halloween.

Here is one possible costume for me.  What do you think?

Ya, I agree.  I better go with being Bob's dad Robert.   :)

What keeps us from sharing our sorrow?

Posted on Oct 16th, 2008 by Doug : Big Heart Doug
This is in Response to the Questions and Reflections for October 16, 2008:

Imgp3424
As a dad, I have a very interesting perspective on why we (as adults) resist sharing our sorrow.  One of my learning edges with my two sons is allowing emotional expression - one of which is sorrow.

I am often surprised by how triggered I get by their emotions.  I have had a tremendous amount of personal healing just being with my own discomfort.  In many ways, it has given me more ability to be with my own emotions...

The knee jerk reaction was to do something or say something to STOP their emotional expression.  Then there is the social pressure I feel from the culture.  "Hey, can't you get your kid to shut up!  I am trying to...(fill in the blank)."

Three different resources gave me the information, training, and the learning environment to shift this reaction and really start to honor the emotions of my boys.

Here are the three resources:
- Resources for Infant Education - www.rie.org
- Patty Wipfler's pamphlets/booklets
- Playmountain Place - a humanistic school (preschool through elementary)

One knee jerk reaction is to attempt to reason with them.  I would launch into some explanation around why it is not reasonable to give them what they want - THEREFORE you should stop expressing those emotions...

The next knee jerk reaction I found myself doing was... (I really hate to admit this one) was to give them what they wanted.

Another good knee jerk reaction was to out express them.  I would get more upset then they were in an attempt get them to stop.

And finally there was the "if I ignore it, it will go away" knee jerk reaction.

What I have come to learn and experience is that kids can't think when they are feeling emotions.  All capacity to reason and think is shut off.  AND ALL they TRULY need is CONNECTION.  Connecting to another human being creates safety and allows the emotions to "clear" so they can then think straight.

I wrote a great article that documents this happening in the back seat of my car sitting on the side of the road.  Go over to Yogi Times.

When I am out in the world today, I have so much compassion for the parents of a child that is caught in the tangle of an emotional explosion.  The parents just don't know what to do to effectively deal with the child.  I watch them repeatedly over power the child forcing them to shut off thier emotions.  Slowly training them to ignore what they are feeling.  Or that thier feelings are "inappropriate".  OUCH!

So, why don't we share our sorrow?  My proposition is that we are trained to hide, stuff, and ignore our emotions as children.

What do you think?
